Massage for baby

Do you rub a bumped knee or elbow when your little one falls over?
Do you stroke your baby's head or tummy as they fall off to sleep?
You probably use baby massage everyday without realising!

Baby massage classes help to broaden your scope of movements and increase your confidence in using baby massage with your baby. It's also a great chance to meet other new mums and socialise.

I teach a routine for the whole body to give you lots of options when massaging your baby but it isn't necessary to set aside a whole hour everyday, baby massage can fit into even the busiest of routines and in fact is of just as much if not more value if you don't get much time alone with your little one as it makes the time you have so special! Whether you just use the scalp movements in the bath when you're washing their hair, or use the tummy movements to ease colic each, small bit of massage has it's own unique benefits even in small doses.

Benefits

Baby massage is not just an enjoyable way for you to spend time with your baby, it is widely acknowledged to have many far reaching benefits for you both. These benefits include:

  • strengthening the bonding between mum and baby
  • helping to relieve colic and wind
  • warming and comforting for mum and baby
  • it can induce relaxation in both mum and baby
  • improving the condition of the skin
  • improving the general well-being of mum and baby
  • strengthening the baby's immune system
  • increasing the suppleness of joints
  • stimulating the systems of the baby's body eg. Circulation, breathing and digestion

Oils

I will provide you with a 50ml bottle of massage oil at the beginning of your first class. The oil I provide is organic cold-pressed sunflower oil as this is lovely and soft on your baby's skin without being greasy and it doesn't matter if baby has a nibble of their hand as the oil is edible and so does no harm. I can refill your bottle at subsequent classes if you need to for a small charge to cover the cost but you can use organic sunflower/olive/vitamin E oil from health food shops or fractionated coconut oil which you can find in some supermarkets. One of the websites included on my 'links' page has baby massage oil for sale.

I would not recommend using 'baby oil' as these are often derived from mineral oils (like petrol) and so it isn't great if baby ingests any. Also they tend to be heavily fragranced which isn't good for baby's skin and the smell for the baby can be quite over powering when it is all over their body. Think about us ... would you be happy for someone to massage you with a heavily scented oil if you didn't like the smell?

You can buy baby massage oils which contain aromatherapy oils, I do not provide this as there is no evidence to prove that a baby's liver and system generally can properly cope with aromatherapy oils safely, so although there is also no evidence that they do any harm I would prefer not to recommend them until there is research to prove the safety.

Classes

Scheduled Classes [I have no classes scheduled at present]

Group Classes Price varies according to venue
Baby massage classes tend to work best with 4 or 5 mum and baby pairs, though I could have 6 if required. If you have a group of mums and babies please let me know and I'll set up a class just for you.
The classes run once a week for 5 weeks either during the day or in the evening depending on the venue and the needs of the mums attending. Each week we add in a new part of the routine until by week 5 we cover the full body routine.

Individul Classes £25.00
If you would prefer to have an individual class with just you and your baby I can do these too. A one off class lasts for about an hour, I will show you the whole routine on my massage doll and you can practise on your little one, I am available by phone or email to answer any queries after the class if you need any extra help.
